Ribbons Identified!!!

Thanks to Bill Swiger for assisting in identifying some of the US Army ribbons that were awarded to my Father during WWII.

These numbers correspond to the insignia and ribbons above:

  1. Marksman Badge
  2. Expert Infantryman
  3. Army of Occupation Ribbon
  4. WWII Victory Ribbon
  5. European/African/Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbon
  6. Unknown -- So, I could use a little help if you know what this is.
  7. Good Conduct Ribbon
  8. Purple Heart Ribbon
There is a medal that corresponds to each of these ribbons.  However, the only one that my Father still has is the Purple Heart.

If I have mislabeled any of these, please let me know.  And, yes, I am aware that one of the ribbons is upside down.  Do you know which one?

  1. 1 isn't a marksman badge. It's a Combat Infantryman Badge. You earn 2 with training and a test. Then when you go to combat, your EIB (Expert Infantryman Badge) is upgraded to a Combat Infantry Badge. If don't have an EIB and you go into combat, you don't get a CIB. You don't wear both at the same time. Once you get the CIB, you throw your EIB into a drawer and never wear it again.

  2. Greetings! The general rule is up and towards the wearer's heart is higher precedence. Your ref #8 (his PH) is highest in precedence, so it would be in the top-most row and on the left as viewed (worn closest to your father's heart). His GCM #7 would be top & center. The mystery #6 ribbon MAY have been state issued, and looks very similar to an Alabama State Defense Force ribbon... no clue on precedence.
The bottom row, left to right, should probably be #5, #4, and #3; however, the #5 EAME Campaign Medal ribbon needs to be flipped so that the Italian flag green/white/red stripes are left, USA's blue/white/red are center, and German black/white are right; campaign stars point upwards. The #3 Army of Occupation Medal ribbon should remain with the black stripe to the viewer's left. I hope this helps.

  3. What do the 2 stars on # 5 represent?
